Enjoy a day of caves and wine on a tour of Kartchner Caverns and Sonoita Vineyards. Discover how, in November 1974, Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts were exploring the limestone hills next to the Whetstone Mountains, looking “for a cave no one had ever found”…and found it! The two spelunkers kept the cave a secret until February 1978 when they told the property owners, James and Lois Kartchner, about their discovery. On this underground tour, you will see stunning formations and learn about the cave development’s endless unforeseen legal, research, planning, and construction challenges. After the cave tour, participants will dine on box lunches before heading over to Sonoita Vineyards for a wine presentation and tasting from their knowledgeable staff. Sonoita Vineyards is oldest commercial vineyard and winery in Arizona and consistently creates award-winning wines. At 5,000 feet in elevation among rolling grasslands, the vineyard is surrounded on three sides by rolling mountain ranges.
